Rebound hammer measurements covered all obelisk faces to indicate non-destructively the material hardness and estimate the strength variation of the obelisk. Thermal imaging investigation was also carried out for each face.
Material
The stability of these monumental structures needs to be assessed by engineers and Egyptologists in cooperation. They need to conduct wind tunnel tests to study the responses of these obelisks to high-intensity winds such as downbursts and tornadoes. In addition, the obelisks need to be tested under natural frequencies of vibration to determine if a dynamic analysis will be necessary.
To understand the physico-mechanical behavior of these structures, a multidisciplinary team was appointed to carry out several laboratory tests and non-destructive surveys. The SAP2000 model was used to calculate the loads on each obelisk and the straining actions at different sections of the structure. The use of 3-D 8-node solid finite elements was important as it allowed for the obelisks’ significant taper along their height to be represented accurately.
